Biante Model Cars are very pleased to present the 1:18 Scale Ford Falcon Sprint driven by Jim Richards to win the 2010 Touring Car Masters Championship.
Expat Kiwi Jim Richards is a giant of Australasian motorsport and the seven-time Bathurst 1000 has shown no signs of slowing down. The Melbourne-based racer has found a welcome home competing in the Touring Car Masters category, which supports Virgin Australia Supercars Championship at various events around Australia.
After first debuting in the category in a Camaro in 2007, Richards set to work building his own mount for the series that celebrates all types of muscle cars. His choice was a 1964 Ford Falcon Sprint featuring a 289 cubic inch (4.2-litre) V8 engine and a NASCAR-spec Borg-Warner Super T10 ‘dog box’. After a rebuild over a two year period it was finally ready to go racing and debuted at Hidden Valley in Darwin in 2008.
While it may have had a smaller engine than the majority of Richards’ outright rivals, its comparative lack of weight and the sublime skill of its pilot instantly made it a TCM title contender. Richards and the Falcon Sprint finished fourth in their first full TCM championship together in 2009 behind the Fords of Gavin Bullas (Mustang), Brad Tilley (Falcon) and John Bowe (Mustang).
The development of the Falcon Sprint was such that it had the right balance of speed and reliability to take victory in the 2010 Touring Car Masters series in Group 1 in a keenly contested year against the likes of Mustang drivers Bowe and Gavin Bullas as well as the Camaro of Andrew Miedecke and Falcon of Leanne Tander.
Held over eight rounds, that year’s TCM title chase following the V8 Supercars Championship at seven of its rounds in addition to competing at the popular Muscle Car Masters at Eastern Creek in September. The championship chase began at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide with a round victory for Miedecke before Bowe clean-swept the second round at Winton in Victoria. Richards was in great form in the third round at Hidden Valley in Darwin, clean-sweeping all three races to take the round win. Bowe won round four at Eastern Creek before consistency won Richards the Bathurst round despite not winning any of the three races that weekend.
Bowe bounced back with victory on home soil in round six at Symmons Plains in Tasmania before Richards again followed up a Bowe round win with one of his own at the penultimate round at Sandown. Appropriately, the final round on the Sydney Olympic Park street circuit saw Richards take victory in the final race of the season when he simply needed to finish the race to claim the crown. The series victory meant Richards had won a national championship across five different decades covering the 1970s, 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s, a brilliant achievement.
Richards won the crown just 16 points clear of Sydney round winner Gavin Bullas with Bowe third, Miedecke fourth and Tander fifth in a classic year of racing for the muscle car-dominated category. The result took Richards to yet another series crown to add to his already sparkling motorsport resume that includes seven Bathurst 1000s, four Australian Touring Car Championships, multiple Targa Tasmania wins and an Australian NASCAR Championship among many others.
Produced in die cast with fully opening parts other than the boot, this model has nice detail and has been produced in an exclusive limited edition of 1000 pieces. The model will come with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity signed by Jim, it’s one that shouldn’t be missed.
