Holdens have become rare. Although many examples, maybe even hundreds, were originally produced, only one, or very few, now survive in drivable condition. Such vehicles include those produced by General Motors-Holden’s (GMH) for government departments. The ‘special’ category includes vehicles that are particularly interesting, or that have survived in unrestored condition, which means that they have largely original paint and trim. Some of them are in amazingly fine condition, while others have been faithful workhorses all their lives, and their paint and trim bear the ravages of time. Finally, there are vehicles that have special numbers, like 1 or 500,000.
The first part of this book, ‘The Survivors’, features photographs of Holden treasures taken in more recent times, while the second part, ‘The Archives’, consists of old photographs of Holden treasures in their heyday. As 2018 marks the seventieth anniversary of the Holden, it seems appropriate to celebrate ‘Australia’s Own Car’ in this way. It has been my practice in all previous books to avoid as far as possible the repetition of photographs from one title to another, but for this book I have had to break my rule and include a small handful of photographs that readers may recognise from my previous books. This has been necessary in order to bring together photographs of a particular vehicle and to give a more comprehensive overview of the model range involved in various categories.
